International Planned Parenthood Federation: Still Sexy at 60

Each year 76 million women in developing countries become pregnant - because they were not informed or do not have access to modern contraceptives. Many of them decide in their need for an abortion.

More than 350, 000 women die each year from the consequences of an unwanted pregnancy or complications during pregnancy or childbirth.

In reducing maternal mortality, Millennium Development Goal 5, are of all Millennium Development Goals ( MDGs ) recorded the least progress.

Under international agreements, Germany has agreed to contribute that women may determine their own sexuality. This requires investment in health and education, family planning and education work.

To improve the sexual and reproductive health in developing countries Germany has provided more than a billion euros available since the UN Conference on Population and Development in Cairo (1994). From 2011, annual funding to support the self-determined family planning and reproductive health will be doubled to 80 million Euros per year. The formation of work for family planning should be promoted. The programs supported by Germany are aimed at both women and to men to be more involved in the responsibility.

Germany is working in this field at the international level with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the World Health Organization (WHO). Additionally, the Federal Republic supports the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) with contributions and trust funds for special programs.


HIV and AIDS are spreading in many countries further. The proportion of women and girls among the infected has risen sharply in recent decades and is now the world about 50 percent. Lack of equality and lack of sexual self-help that women are often not informed enough about the modes of transmission of HIV and who are able to apply and to demand safe protection methods.

Germany supports numerous projects for the prevention and control of HIV / AIDS - for example, through participation in the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. The Federal Republic also promotes measures to develop health services and health insurance systems.
