Northern Region to host National Family Planning Week – Diamond

Saturday May 18, 2013, 6:59 pm Ecuador's government announced this week to strengthen the National Family Planning Strategy for the sake of reducing teenage pregnancy figures and raise awareness of the responsibilities of having an active sex life.

In an exclusive interview with Prensa Latina, the Coordinating Minister of Politics, Betty Tola Ecuador recalled that sex education is respected as a civil right protected by the Constitution.

"The constitutional section of Liberty Rights, Article 66 paragraph 10 states" the right to make free, responsible and informed about their health and reproductive life and to decide when and how many sons and daughters have, "said the owner.

The minister also said that the deepening of the program is that from 2000 to 2010, cases of pregnant 10 year old girls and adolescents under 14 increased by 78 percent.

"This is a fact that any responsible government and in particular to us, worry us greatly and hence arises the decision to create the National Family Planning Strategy, which seeks to reduce this increase prevention mechanisms, " he said.

Tola said that "if one gets two minutes in the skin of a 10, 11, 12, 13 or 14 years with a pregnancy, he realizes that it can not happen", so he insisted on the need "as he takes this issue in a responsible way with a comprehensive strategy."

In 1995, Ecuador adopted in law free birth and childcare, very important conquest of women who established the gratuity for their access to contraception and family planning.

Currently, the South American country has a program of sexual and reproductive health working in the information and free access to contraception, fulfilling a constitutional mandate and the will of the people to approve.
